We Have Some Really Cool Cats and Kittens

By Terri Duncan

Due to the success of our “Cool Cats and Kittens” adoption promotion, we are extending this offer into 2010. This means that adoption fees for TVAR cats and kittens continue to be just $50. This program is really helping the cats and kittens find forever homes. With kitten season upon us, it’s our hope that this special will entice more outstanding households to add a new furry member to their family.

East Bay Stand Down (EBSD)

August 5 - 8, 2010

By Leslie Haas

This year’s East Bay Stand Down will be held in August at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. The event is held every other year. It will be a site of refuge for approximately 500 homeless veterans who to regroup, get fed, have shelter, and receive medical and dental care, along with other needed services. Once again, Tri-Valley Animal Rescue will take a lead role in the “Pet Stand Down.” In previous years, some homeless veterans did not participate in the EBSD because their animal companions were not allowed. While the veterans were given a respite from the street, TVAR will be partnering with other humane/rescue groups in the area to provide the homeless veterans’ animals with medical care, food, socializing, grooming services and provided veterinary care like we did in 2008. The next planning meeting for this event is scheduled for March 3. To get involved with this worthwhile effort, contact Leslie Haas at tvarleslie@prodigy.net or 925-216-2569.

Petfinder.com

The new Petfinder iPhone app (application) is another way to make certain the public can view adoptable pets no matter where they are or what they are doing. Check it

out here: itunes.apple.com

Just like on the full www.Petfinder.com

website, app users can search by species, breed, age, gender and size.

They can scroll down for more info and see complete pet descriptions and directions to your adoption locations. They can mark a pet as a favorite and share with friends via

email, Facebook or Twitter. Best of all, they can call or email you right from the app to inquire about adoption.

View the new Petfinder iPhone app yourself and encourage any iPhone user to download it. It is free and the reviews are very good – with one stating that they already found

and adopted their new cat thanks to the app.

So encourage your friends to think ADOPTION when considering a new pet and the way to do that is to keep your pets in front of them as much as possible. The new Petfinder iPhone app is another free and easy tool for adopters.

Great News

By Terri Duncan

Beginning in January, TVAR started a program to promote the adoption of the cat that had been at ECAS the longest. TVAR provides a litterbox, bed, food and water dishes, toys and a bag of food to the family that adopts the "Cat of the Month". The cat is advertised by TVAR on craigslist,

and once adopted, TVAR provides the family with a

courtesy vet visit, microchipping and rabies vaccine.

In January, Ping was successfully adopted the first week of the year.

Princess, an adult torti who had been at the shelter since October, was selected to be February's Cat of the Month. Her story and picture were posted to craigslist

one night, and Princess was adopted when the shelter opened the very next morning by a family who saw her posting and drove from Richmond to adopt Princess.

We sent Princess off to her new home with lots of good wishes for a happy future!

Kitten Season Is Upon Us

By Carole Leschinsky

Bottle feeding photo by Robin Maskiell

Are you a kitty lover who truly wants to make a difference? With kitten season soon to be upon us, we need kitten bottle baby fosters. Litters and single kittens often come to us without their moms and need to be bottle fed in order to survive and thrive. Tri-Valley Animal Rescue provides the bottles, formula, medical care, etc. Sally Ward and I are available to our bottle baby fosters to any answer questions they have.

We also do a thorough check of the kittens’ health before giving them to a foster. We have new fosters come to our home to pick up their kittens so we can go through how to feed the babies, how to keep them warm, what to watch out for, etc. We always make sure the new foster is comfortable with the kittens we are giving them.

Bottle feeding is a lot of work but it is so rewarding knowing that you are saving a life and preparing this kitten for its forever home.

For more information, please contact me, Carole Leschinsky at 925-683-1956 or littertoes@comcast.net.
