This year marks a special anniversary for TTFF—20 years of giving financial assistance to children in need and 10 years of providing camp experiences. Co-founders Barry and Elaine Taylor said, “When we think back over these 20 years, we never imagined that so many people from every walk of life would care as much as we do for the incredible children we serve. We thank our ‘lucky charms’ that together we have all helped these campers and their families find more joy and hope.”
Campers are just as thankful. Consider Janessa, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 10 years old. With surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation she did well, but relapsed when she was 12, so her doctors started her on an aggressive therapy. Janessa is now 16, and has been cancer free for 4.5 years! However, due to the treatment, she lost almost all of her hearing. She wears hearing aids in both ears and is learning American Sign Language.
When asked about attending TTFF’s Pediatric Brain Tumor Camp, Janessa’s mom says, “It has brought the family closer together, in more ways than one. The family has a better understanding of what Janessa went through. We love the camaraderie of all the other family members who attend. We look forward to going each time, and say that it’s more like a family reunion because of the closeness we’ve built with all the other families.”
Camp Arroyo, in addition to hosting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Camp, provides a safe haven for children with HIV/AIDS, skin and heart disease, colitis, diabetes, bi-polar, autism, and other chronic and critical illnesses. Campers and their families are offered opportunities to gain independence, build self-confidence, become more optimistic, and benefit by taking a break from the struggles of everyday life. Kids meet other children with similar conditions, learn to live with their disease, and make lasting friendships. TTFF’s Camp Arroyo is an opportunity for kids to simply be kids—without worrying about medicine, doctors, surgeries and their health.

About The Taylor Family Foundation
The Taylor Family Foundation, founded by Elaine and Barry Taylor in 1991, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In 1998, TTFF partnered with the East Bay Regional Park District to build Camp Arroyo, a year-round residential camp in Livermore, CA. TTFF funds the summer program at Camp Arroyo and is co-operated by the YMCA of the East Bay. During the school year, the camp is used as an Environmental Education Center for local school children.
Camp Arroyo sleeps 144 children. Not only is it a state-of-the-art facility, but Camp Arroyo was built “green” long before “green” was fashionable. The camp includes a dining hall, pool complex with two bathhouses, an arts and crafts center, sports court, challenge ropes course, meadow for field sports, a bocce court, an organic garden, and an infirmary.
About Day in the Park
With the generous support of our donors, The Taylor Family Foundation has hosted Day in the Park for 19 years. Traditionally the event, which raises the funds needed to send nearly 3,000 children to Camp Arroyo at no cost to their families, is held the last Sunday in August. With the struggling economy making daily headlines, TTFF chose to cancel last year’s event to offer donors a break from giving and a chance to tend to their own financial needs.
