Seth Adams Speaks on Peregrine Patrol

January 12, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Naturalist Seth Adams, Land Conservation Director of Save Mount Diablo played a pivotal role in re-establishing Peregrine Falcons in the pinnacles of Castle Rock in Pine Canyon, a traditional nesting site for these beautiful birds of prey, which were driven to near-extinction by DDT. The pesticide was banned in 1972.

Peregrine populations have bounced back, but face increasing human disturbance in places like Castle Rock Park, the main access to the pinnacle area, where up to 100,000 people hike, bike, and climb every year.

Two years ago, VIP’s in the park formed a Peregrine Patrol Team to help the staffs of both Castle Rock Park and Mount Diablo State Park keep climbers out of the nesting area from February 1st to July 31st, an official closure period, and to educate other visitors who come to this spectacular rock outcrop on Mount Diablo State Park’s western edge.
